Thus far we have used inanimate objects, (although many would disagree. when discussing steam locos) to illustrate our February theme. So today’s offering rather nicely combines the human element – the porter, his favourite drink – porter and of course the port of Harwich. If you were traveling to Harwich to catch a ferry, then you would alight at Parkeston Quay.
Back in the day your choice of destination might have been any of the following, the Hook of Holland, Flushing (Vlissingen), Antwerp, Zeebrugge and Esbjerg. So from your first port of call in the Netherlands, Belgium or Denmark, pretty much all of northern Europe would have been fairly accessible.
In the early 1950s Britannia class locomotives regularly hauled the boat trains, such as the Hook Continental & the Day Continental.

The locomotive on this label looks like a B17 class 4-6-0 of the LNER, designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for the former Great Eastern Railway lines. A number of these were named after well-known football clubs, with a metal football incorporated in the nameplate – you can just make this out in the picture on the label.
