Spot The Difference #109; Magee, Marshall Oatmeal Stout

We have just added a number of labels to the Magee, Marshall & Co Ltd page of our Featured Brewery section. And to whet your appetite here is one of the additions, an early Oatmeal Stout label together with the more common later example. Magee’s labels can be found HERE.

Plz can someone tell me when it bacame obligatory to print the fluid contents on beer bottle labels in UK? Thanks.

Contents became a statutory requirement in 1965. The label had to state the minimum contents; just short of the pint or half pint initially in fluid ounces and then when we joined the ‘common market’ in millilitres. And there was a period when both fluid ounces and millilitres were in use. I will try to find a set of labels which show the progression.

Some breweries, one such example is Federation Breweries Ltd, started much earlier that the regulation date of 1965. Federation started to state ‘min conts’ on their labels in the late 1950’s/early 1960’s.
