Liverpool Bottlers and their brands #35

In 1936/7, Alexander MacFee and Co, under the control of Arthur Guinness, bought out the remaining Liverpool Export bottlers. With the purchase of the companies came the full range of trademarks. Here is Macfee’s version of the T.B.Hall label seen in the previous post. I should mention now, Boar’s Head Brand beers were brewed by the Phoenix Brewery in Amersfoort. macfee-2

Not all Boar’s Head Brand beers were brewed by Phoenix, only the Dark and Light Lagers. This lable was always used on the back of the bottle. MacFee, already part of Guinness had taken over in the period up to 1937 a number of bottlers and thus of trade marks. Phoenix probably lost these contracts in this period and focused on ‘Export Bottlers’, i.e. Reads, Robert Porter and Machen & Hudson with remaining trade marks, such as Llama, Lantern, Dogs Head, Giraffe, Hippo, Panda and Parrot.
