Our next theme will look at bottlers based in the City of Liverpool. Examples will include their own brands for the export market and also those companies that bottled beers from national brewers like Guinness, Marston and Barclay using labels from the brewers themselves. Liverpool had a very close relationship with Guinness and we start with Compass Brand of Foreign Extra Stout from Alexander Macfee.
Macfee had been a small bottler which was purchased by Guinness in 1932 and which grew rapidly in the 1930s as it absorbed a number of struggling companies in the difficult trading conditions.
