Railways #16 – Local Line

A while back, we had “Mainline”, so it is only fair that we give the Local Line a chance.

Local Line

This label dates back to the late 1980’s, which was well before I started collecting beer labels. So that’s is my excuse for today, so over to you guys to fill in the gaps.

The locomotive looks like an ex-GWR ‘Dukedog’, introduced in 1936. With their outside frames, they looked pretty archaic even at that time – but they were in fact rebuilds of earlier locomotives, with a curious combination of ‘Duke’ boilers and ‘Bulldog’ frames (hence ‘Dukedog’). They were used particularly on the ex-Cambrian Railways lines to Aberystwyth and Pwllheli, and were all withdrawn by 1960, although one survives on the Bluebell Railway. And the label dates from 1984-87, after the Chudley/Godson merger, when Chudley’s beers were being brewed at the former Godson’s brewery.
