Prohibition labels: Colo, a malt beverage

To accompany the addition of Prohibition labels to our featured brewery section, here is a bit of history. Prohibition devastated the American Brewing industry. Companies turned to cereal beverages, root beers, malt extract, soft drinks, ice cream and dairy products, ice as well as branching out into manufacturing. The first products were produced by ‘stopping’ fermentation of the liquor when the alcohol level had reached one half of one per cent. This early 1920s label from Columbia Brewing Co, shows the mandatory requirements for labeling at that time: the type of beverage, alcohol content and the name of the bottler. The use of the word beer was soon stopped. The contents although not a requirement was established practice by this time.
