Another suggestion for our blog from Dale, so a number of cask labels, or barrel labels will follow over the next few weeks. To start us off is this stunning example from Magee, Marshall & Co Ltd of Bolton. My thanks go to Edd the Brewer, who allowed us access to this label.

This is immaculate. How do you get access to labels like this? Never seen one like it before.

Just in case you are interested:
The character depicted in the famous Magee Marshall Trade Mark was reputed to be a farmer from the Markland Hill area of Bolton. He frequently visited a public house near the brewery for his beer and a cheese lunch, A giant model of this gentleman was made by the brewery and displayed at carnivals in the town. Later it was on view in the Bolton Museum and Art Gallery.
Cheers

Thanks for your comments Dale, I was certain that the chap in the figure wasn’t the portrait of David Magee that most people seem to think!, I had suspicions that it was a pic of Daniel Marshall, as it resembles a picture I have of a figure (with Mutton Chops extraordinaire!!!) in a brewers cart Ca 1865/70 which is clearly labeled Daniel Marshall, Grapes Brewery, Brown St , Bolton
(The picture is pretty faded, but is legible.
I also have Daniel Marshall ‘s first lease on the Grapes Brewery, Brown St (1865);
David Magee’s Spirit Licence renewal Memorial ca 1870; and a whopping great lease on Vellum from 1829 (12+pages) for the Wigan Brewery of Henry Robinson & Co from Thomas Morris who was married to Henry Robinson’s only lawful child , a daughter ( Thomas Morris was also Mayor of Wigan in1846) to John Hodgson Kearsley , who was MP for Wigan around that time (nicknamed the beer barrel of Wigan I believe!) .
Best Regards,
Edd

Interesting historical detail Edd. I have been reading something (from May last year) about Magee, Marshall being re-launched with two “historical” beers which it was planned to bottle and I wondered what the situation is now?

Hi Eric,
I’ll hopefully have some more news soon; I’m planning to launch with a version of the BB (Best Beer, a best mild, strangely sitting somewhere between a mild and a best bitter!!) and a brand new session beer @ 3.8-9% abv , golden and hoppy !!, using top quality malts, and a blend of English and European hops probably about 34-6 IBU.
